KwaZulu-Natal – Police are investigating a fire that’s destroyed more than 1 000 shacks in Durban, in the early hours of Sunday morning. It’s still unclear what sparked the blaze at the Richmond Road informal settlement. Over a thousand people have been left homeless. Shack dwellers organisation, Abahlali baseMjondolo, is appealing to the public for assistance. “We are appealing for help. The community doesn’t even have a hall where victims can be housed temporarily. We are also making calls to individuals to reach out to those affected by the fire,” said SBU Zikode from Abahlali baseMjondolo. |
