INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION

  1. This question paper consists of TWO sections:
    SECTION A: Essay (50)
    SECTION B: Transactional texts (50)
  2. Answer ONE question from SECTION A and TWO from SECTION B.
  3. Write in the language in which you are being assessed.
  4. Start each section on a NEW page.
  5. You must plan (e.g. a mind map/diagram/flow chart/key words, etc.), edit and proofread your work. The planning must appear BEFORE the answer.
  6. All planning must be clearly indicated as such. It is advisable to draw a line across all planning.
  7. You are strongly advised to spend approximately:
    • 80 minutes on SECTION A
    • 70 minutes on SECTION B
  8. Number each response correctly according to the numbering system used in this question paper.
  9. Give each response a suitable title/heading, as indicated by the question.
    NOTE: The title/heading must NOT be considered when doing a word count.
  10. Write neatly and legibly


SECTION A: ESSAY
QUESTION 1

Write an essay of 400–450 words (2–2½ pages) on ONE of the following topics.

2.1 FRIENDLY LETTER
An incident/event has enabled you to gain powerful insight into how to relate to people around you. This has led to soul-searching on your part. Write a letter to a friend in which you express your new-found insight. [25]

2.2 FORMAL LETTER TO THE PRESS
The country has been rocked by student protests over university fees. The protests, many of which were marred by violence, brought universities and many cities to a standstill. People have suggested that the “Fees-must-fall” campaign should include schools as well.
Write a letter to your local newspaper in which you express your views about the protests and the campaigns. [25]

2.3 WRITTEN INTERVIEW

You are a journalist for your school newspaper and you conduct an interview with an expert. Your interview could cover aspects such as assertiveness, dealing with conflict and effective communication. The interview is to be published in your school magazine. [25]

2.4 NEWSPAPER ARTICLE
As the head boy/head girl of your school, you are responsible for writing a motivational article for the final edition of your school magazine. Your article is entitled, Sensible steps to a better student life in 2017.

2.5 FORMAL REPORT
Absenteeism is on the increase in schools. As a member of the Students’ Representative Council, you have been asked by your principal to conduct an investigation and draw up a report in which you advise the school about the causes of absenteeism and how best to deal with the problem.
Write the report which you will submit to the Chairperson of the Governing Body of your school. [25]

2.6 CV AND COVERING LETTER

LET’S STOP RHINO POACHING

Would you like to do something to aid conservation and stop the
slaughter of the rhino population? Our company is located in all
the major game farms of South Africa and we need your help to
ensure the survival of the rhino. Help us to put poachers out of
business.
We offer in-service training to only 20 school-leavers who are
passionate about conservation. Deserving participants, who
show potential, stand in line to be awarded bursaries to study at
selected universities.
